Falcon® is a thin alumino-silicate glass developed by AGC Glass Europe for applications requiring a combination of low weight, high optical quality and mechanical strength. Manufactured using a float glass process, the material is designed to be chemically toughened, enabling significantly higher strength than conventional thin soda-lime float glass.
The glass offers high light transmission of up to 92.2% and excellent optical neutrality, making it suitable for applications where colour accuracy and transparency are important. Its alumino-silicate composition allows it to undergo chemical strengthening through an ion-exchange process, in which the glass is immersed in a molten salt bath. This treatment creates a compressive surface layer, resulting in glass that is substantially stronger than thermally toughened glass, particularly in thicknesses below 3 mm.
Falcon is produced in Belgium and can undergo a range of secondary processing operations, including cutting, edge grinding, chemical strengthening, screen printing, acid etching, application of safety films and anti-fingerprint coatings. These processing options enable the material to be tailored to different functional and aesthetic requirements.
The combination of low thickness, reduced weight and high strength makes Falcon suitable for applications across multiple sectors. It is used in consumer electronics such as smartphone and tablet displays, while architectural applications include decorative glazing, curved façades, the inner pane of triple glazing units, balustrades and floor glazing. The material is also suitable for transportation and aerospace applications, where lightweight and durable glazing components are required.
